Testing, Syllabus & Progress

Club Testing Information

We encourage all students to test at every testing because testings are all about giving it a go, rather than achieving the next belt.

All students are ready to test if they are ready to do their best (irrespective of what they remember or how long they’ve been training)!

Club testings/gradings take place every quarter and provide an opportunity for all students to demonstrate what they have learnt in class.

Testings are generally longer than regular classes, and the aim is to work hard, remain spirited and keep focused for the duration. It is amazing what can be achieved when the mind is willing.

Testings are organised similar to group classes but allow time for individual assessment. Judges make notes on what is known as well as syllabus areas that need more practice.

Each student receives one-to-one feedback with an instructor in class the week after testing. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to listen in.

Tigers Academy

BELT STRUCTURE

Tigers Academy members will receive a new belt after every testing, if they have shown good attendance and attainment.

The belt journey starts at white belt followed by yellow, blue, red, brown, black/brown, black belt.

There are stripe belts in between all coloured belts; these are equivalent to half a belt.

Progress/attitude are awarded with a stripe/tab on the current belt.

Competency of the syllabus is awarded with a new belt.

The more frequently a student trains the faster they will progress.

Stripe belts can be skipped, but all students have to reach each full colour belt before progressing to the next. For instance at a first testing, a student will be tested for a yellow belt and cannot skip and go to blue belt even, if they train very frequently and have jumped ahead on syllabus.

Bowing

There is bowing of some form in nearly every martial art style and system.

The act of bowing encapsulates profound respect, humility, and the essence of tradition. Rooted in
the rich cultural heritage of Korea, bowing serves as a poignant gesture that honours not only one’s
instructor but also the timeless wisdom passed down through generations.

It symbolises a deep reverence for the art, fostering an environment of mutual respect and
camaraderie among practitioners. Through the graceful arc of a bow, practitioners acknowledge the
interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, embracing the ethos of discipline and self-awareness
that defines Han guk Mu sool.

Bowing in Han Guk Mu Sool

At the start/end of classes/events, we complete the following bows. We also bow at other times during classes, including to partners and at the start/end of traditional forms/kata.

All bows are silent and from a standing position, creating a right angle at the waist if able to. The belt
knot should be held with both hands and thumbs tucked in behind. Arms are by the side if no belt is worn.

1. Bow to Chief Master (when present), followed by a bow to all Black Belt ranks in order.

2. Bow to start/end class/event facing instructor.

3. Thank you in Korean (end only) “Gam sa ham nida”
